Forests have always been used to provide building materials and firewood. By the mid-1900s it was believed that the forests would soon be gone because of the large amount of wood being used. Then a lot of new forests were planted.
Most small homes in Norway are built of wood. Sawmills and industrial plants manufacture wood-based products. The wood-processing industry produces paper, for example for newspapers. The work of a lumberjack used to be important. Now much of the physical work has been replaced by modern machines. Here are some of the trades that have to do with forestry:
Forestry worker
A forestry worker’s job is, as the name implies, in the forest. As a forestry worker you must know enough about nature to be able to plan and carry out various types of work in the forest.
Logging machine operator
A person with a craft certificate in logging machine operation plans and carries out work relating to the thinning, cutting and transport of timber in the terrain.
Forest ranger
A forest ranger manages the daily work and care of the forest and outlying land. Most forest rangers have studied Forestry at upper secondary school or at university level.
Woodworker
A woodworker works at a sawmill or planing mill. Training is given in the Woodworking Trades programme.
