What must you do to take a trade examination?
You must have completed two years of the Electrical Installation and Maintenance programme with a passing grade. You must then have worked as an apprentice for two years, or have three to four years of experience in the field. You must know everything you need to know if the business is going to register you for the trade examination.
What does the trade examination consist of?
The trade examination has a theoretical component and a practical component. The examination can be of three weeks’ duration.
My task was to carry out a complete installation of electricity in a home. This involved installing a fuse box and an electricity supply, grounding the electrical supply, and installing circuits. I also had to install telecommunications equipment, automation and a fire alarm system.
In the theoretical component, I carried out calculations and documentation of the practical component. I accounted for the preparations that were carried out before the practical work could begin, and among other things I prepared a plan for the materials and tools that would be used and the time needed for the project. I also made the necessary calculations in connection with the installations.
The theoretical component had to be approved by the examiners before I could start on the practical component. The examiners came several times during the process and took random samples. They checked that I was following the plans and that I was complying with laws and regulations when I carried out the professional side of the work.
When all the installations were finished, the job was approved. Then the examiners put in some errors, and I had to show that I could diagnose and fix them.
Two examiners who are professionals in the field evaluated the theoretical component, the work as it was being carried out, and the final result.
What happens to someone who does not pass the trade examination?
They need to improve their knowledge, and then take the examination again when they feel better prepared.
What kinds of opportunities du you have for further education once you have taken the trade examination?
You can become an installation electrician by studying at a technical school or pursuing an engineering degree. This takes three to four years. Then you have a period of practical training that ends with an examination.
What plans do you have for your future in this trade?
I’m considering becoming an installation electrician.
What kinds of jobs do you think are best?
I like servicing best because it’s varied work with a lot of challenges.
What are you working on now?
I’m doing servicing work with an installation electrician.
How is the working environment on the job?
I think it’s very good, and that’s the most important part of enjoying the job.
What kinds of advantages do you have when you are organised in a trade union?
There are many unorganised craftsmen in the electrical trade. It’s an advantage to be organised, because then you’re in a stronger position to engage in negotiations on wages, working hours and other things.
How much do you earn now, after taking the trade examination?
Now I’m earning 270,000 kroner a year.
