We have talked to Anne, who works at a fish farm.

What kind of education do you have?

I finished upper secondary school. In my first year of upper secondary school I took the Agriculture, Fishing and Forestry programme, blue line, and in my second year I took the Aquaculture programme. Then I was an apprentice for two years. After that I got my craft certificate in Aquaculture. Now I’ve been working at this facility for three years.

What kind of facility are you working at?

We have several facilities here. We have our own hatchery where we hatch salmon roe into fry. We produce 500,000 fry a year. And we have a hatchery on dry land where the fish are fed in tanks until they can be put into the sea. The largest facility is the grow-out facility, which is in the sea. The fish are fed here until it is time for them to be slaughtered.

What are your work tasks?

Now I work mostly at the grow-out facility. We are three technicians who take care of all the technical aspects of the facility and the feeding and care of the fish. When a salmon is 3–5 kilos, it is slaughtered. It’s about 2–3 years old then. We deliver between 500 and 1000 tonnes of salmon for slaughtering every year. A facility such as this one represents high value. We must be careful that the fish do not get sick, and that there is no damage to the equipment and the facility.

How do you like your work?

I like it very much, and have never regretted getting my education in this field. I like working outside, but it’s also interesting to work with the small fish in the hatchery. Most of the people working with fish farms are men, and I like that. Sometimes the work can be a little heavy going for me, but then I ask one of the men to help me. Everyone is pleasant and we all respect each other. We have a really good work environment here.
