5. Reflexive pronouns

-self or -selves?

A lot of people get this wrong, and if you are one of them, this is for you!

  • -self is singular (= just one)
  • -selves is plural (= more than one)

Why not try to learn these:

  • I can look after myself
  • you can look after yourself (speaking to one person)
  • he can look after himself
  • she can look after herself
  • it can look after itself
  • we can look after ourselves
  • you can look after yourselves (speaking to more than one person)
  • they can look after themselves

Fill in the correct reflexive pronoun here:

  1. I am teaching to play the piano.
  2. Be careful with that knife, Sam. You might cut .
  3. OK, you people, lunch is ready. Please just help .
  4. Don’t worry about the cat – it can look after .
  5. I wish the children would behave .
  6. Mary mended the car ; she didn’t need any help.
  7. We can amuse while you are out.
